Digital X-rays

To provide you with the best care possible, we use some of the latest dental technology at Smiles by Steedman in Lake Stevens, including digital radiography. The latest in dental X-ray technology, digital radiography uses an electronic sensor to digitally capture and store images of your teeth on a computer. We can instantly view these images and enlarge them to see exactly what is going on with your oral health. Requiring significantly less radiation than the already safe traditional film X-rays, digital X-rays are a diagnostic tool that is both safe and effective.

Digital X-rays of your teeth and mouth provide Dr. Steedman and our team with essential information about your oral health that cannot be discovered during a typical dental exam. We can use the digital dental X-rays to detect:

  • Problems inside a tooth
  • Cysts or abscesses
  • Abnormal tooth and root positions
  • Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors
  • Developmental abnormalities
  • Decay between the teeth
  • Bone loss
  • Issues below the gum line

Are digital dental X-rays safe?

Yes! Digital X-rays do not significantly add to the natural radiation we are exposed to from the environment. In addition, they are safer than traditional X-rays. To ensure your safety, however, we always take every precaution. This includes taking only necessary X-rays and using a lead apron shield to protect your body as the X-rays are taken.

Should I have digital dental X-rays taken at every check-up?

This will depend on your individual needs. Dr. Steedman will review your dental and medical histories, complete a comprehensive dental exam, and evaluate your signs, symptoms, and risk for disease before consulting with you on how often you should have dental X-rays taken.

Dr. Steedman typically recommends that new patients have dental X-rays taken so we can get a good idea of how your teeth and mouth work together. Bite-wing X-rays (which are digital X-rays of the teeth biting together) are usually taken as part of your six-month check-ups, but may need to be taken more often depending on your needs.
